I can still knit!
Oh yes I can!
I started this scarf a year ago, and let it take a time out for a while (check it out on Jan 2008). It's a 2 color star stitch with 40 sts, using Fable's Baby Alpaca and a mohair/silk blend, on Addi lace size 6 needles. I've made one of these scarves before, for my sister, but never got a chance to wear it... I had some left over Baby Alpaca from a yet-to-be-published pattern (you can see the book cover in Yahaira's sidebar), and oh, it is so soft! It had to become something I could snuggle up with. Unfortunately, I used up tons of alpaca to make fringe, and don't have enough yarn to make a matching hat. Doh!
By the way, does that photo make me look pregnant? Does it?! I know it will soon become obvious, but I really wish I was showing more... Baby is kicking actively, I'm gaining weight, and I'd like to have something to show!
Just before Christmas, I realized that I needed to craft at least one present. I decided to make 2, for a darling little girl named Daisy. (Yes, I already made her a Daisy hat).
The Soto Softie Penguin pattern was just what I needed. Except that my hand sewing looks like crap... Next time, I think I will machine sew the feet, legs and eyes to the body *before* assembling the penguin (instead of machine assembling the body and hand sewing the added body parts). The pattern is very well written, with little diagrams to show you exactly what to do! I always thought that sewing patterns needed diagrams.
Then, I had a moment of hesitation. What if Daisy doesn't like penguins? What if her parents think she might tear off a penguin limb and ingest it? (Which is entirely possible). This little hat came to the rescue!
It's the Who? pattern, found for free on Ravelry. I used double stranded Habu Soft Wool on size 6 needles, and it took about a couple of hours to make. And just as long to embroider 7 pairs of eyes in rainbow colors! This gift was, thankfully, a hit, as Daisy needed a new hat. (The penguin was a hit too; those large floppy feet inspired Daisy to make her penguin run all over my apartment, among 20 guests).
